Shirley May Lane, 85 passed to her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 27, 2016. Shirley was the daughter of the late Charles Francis and Lucille Whitehouse. Shirley married Joseph Lane on December 29, 1951. She met Joe at Stunt Night practice at Cathedral High School where Shirley graduated from in 1949. Shirley and Joe would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this December. She was the loving, caring and devoted mother of four children. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Lane, Sr. of South Burlington; their children Joseph, Jr. and Kim Lane of South Burlington, Kathryn and Victor Senic of Grapeville, PA, Jeffrey and Ellen Lane of Charlotte, and Karen Lane of South Burlington; nine grandchildren, Stefanie, Billy, Andrew, Dillon, Jeramiah, Kirby, Ryan, Bailey, and Jess; one brother Donald Francis of New York plus many nieces, nephews and cousins including a special cousin Sandra Chamberlain of Florida. She was predeceased by a brother Robert Whitehouse of Burlington. Her life was very active in volunteering for worthy causes. She was a breast cancer survivor for 36 years, a member of the "Dragonheart Paddlers" for 7 years. Shirley was truly a survivor in times of serious illness throughout her life. Her compassion, dedication, example and spirit as a hospice volunteer for others who were ill, is legendary. She was a faithful member of St. John Vianney Parish where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. Family was a high priority in her life. Shirley attended her grandchildren's sports games where her voice was heard loud and clear. She will be profoundly missed by all. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and Chaplain Fr. Tim Sullivan as well as the support staff for the tender loving care she received at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
