The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 19th, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Cox Funeral Home in Bastrop. At 6 pm, his mother will be honored by the Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana, NELA Chapter 6. Duke was a child of God, a loving son, and he was a patriot. When he enlisted in the National Guard, he became a warrior. As he trained and stood proudly with his fellow soldiers, he knew these were truly his Brothers-in-Arms. Although normally soft-spoken, his tone was apt to change to an intensity when he spoke of commitment to his family and country and to these men, these friends, these brothers. Each, ready to give their lives for one another. We would often praise him for being a part of the defense of this great nation. He and his dad would talk of the check that Duke had signed upon enlistment. “A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America, for an amount of up to and including their life.”
