COLUMBIA - Stanley L. "Buddy" Summer went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 2, 2017. Stanley was born April 10, 1942 in Columbia, S.C., to Alice and Harry Summer.
He was the fourth of five children and is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, June Smyrl and Nancy Vodry, and brother, Jim "Sonny" Summer. He is survived by his sister, Delores Smith of Columbia.
Buddy lived much of his adult life in his chosen home of Maryville, Tenn., before returning to Columbia to be near his family. Buddy lived a simple life and pursued his interests with a passion easily visible to those around him. He took great pride in his career as an airline pilot, flying for Piedmont Airlines from 1969 until 1989 and retiring on the Boeing 727. He had a great love of bluegrass music, and a true love of his chosen home of Tennessee. Buddy was also an avid gardener with a true green thumb, and shared vegetables with his family and friends in the community. He also had a great love of animals, and loved his Sheltie dogs. Buddy will be remembered for his passion and his knowledge by his many nieces, nephews, as well as great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2017 in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
