Susie Amanda Barbour Zapffel, 96, of Craven County, NC, passed away with family by her side at the CarolinaEast Medical Center on Thursday, July 13, 2017. She was born Friday, September 24, 1920 in Bridgeton, NC, one of four children of the late Clem and Ludie Paul Barbour, a shopkeeper and a dressmaker. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 41 years, George Leon Zapffel.

She was a graduate of The Medical College of Virginia (now incorporated into Virginia Commonwealth University) and had worked as an RN at old St. Luke's Hospital in New Bern. She was a faithful and active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church.

Susie was a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her three children, Paul Willis Zapffel, Anna Zapffel, and Jan Zapffel Carpenter (and husband Howard Primrose Carpenter, Jr.), four grandchildren, Amber Zapffel (and husband Paul-Scott Schernitzki), Joshua Howard Carpenter, Jason Paul Carpenter and Sean Paul Clark (and wife Geneva Tiffany Clark) and two great-grandchildren, Tobias Allen Clark and Austin Markus Clark.
She was a kind neighbor and friend to many. She was a lady of great character, witty and good humored. Her main interests included reading, painting, sewing, quilting, cross-stitch, and crossword puzzles. She had many creative activities and was a member of two quilting clubs. She was known for her love of old-fashioned roses. In the 1960s she was a member of Home Demonstration Clubs in Bridgeton and Antioch.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. Burial will at New Bern National Cemetery.
