Sybil Stone, 88, of Ames, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. A gathering of friends will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in the Social Room, Main Building, at Northcrest Retirement Community, 1801 20th St., in Ames.

Sybil Stone was born Aug. 26, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo., to John and Amelia (Burton) Maxwell. She grew up in St. Louis, moved to Ames Jan. 1, 1950, then to Witchita, Kan., in 1952, and returned to Ames in 1959.

On Aug. 11, 1942, she married Vernon Stone. Sybil was a homemaker and was called the "Neighborhood Mother." She loved animals and plants, was a volunteer at the Thrift Shop, and was a member of Questers for 50 years.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon Stone, of Ames; and daughter, Laura Stone, of Knife River, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David Burton Stone; and brother, John Paul Maxwell.

Donations to the Ames Animal Shelter, located at 324 Billy Sunday Road in Ames, can be sent to the First National Bank in Ames, in memory of Sybil Stone.

Sybil loved life in the full range and scope of its manifestations. This love was expressed by the empathy, care, nurture and welfare of plants, animals and people who came under her hand. Her son (who gave his life in service to his country) and her daughter were at the center of her concerns with a deep unwavering devotion. People whom she touched directly through her personality, her neighbors and their children as well as friends from the full spectrum of daily life knew her well, and knowing her, loved her. Indeed her spirit enhanced the whole community even beyond her personal reach.

Sybil created her space on earth with unerring taste. She created a beautiful garden bearing this inscription, "Cherish all living things." We cherish the beautiful person who will live with us in memory.
