Thelma "Thel" Bryant Bowman, 95, of Durham, NC, died on July 7. Prior to April 2016, Thelma had lived in Louisville, KY, since 1945.

Thelma was born on February 15, 1921 in Tompkinsville, KY, to Oscar and Flo Bryant. She was married to Jesse "Jess" Albert Bowman on December 17, 1938. They were married for 67 years.

Thelma worked as a hairdresser for 50 years. She took great delight in her family and friends. She loved collecting recipes and socializing, playing bridge and gardening, and being involved in the life of her church and community. Thel and Jess spent many Friday nights square dancing with the Bells and Bows Square Dance Club. When Baptist East Hospital opened in 1975, Thelma was one of the original members of the Volunteer Board. While holding several positions on the Auxiliary Board, she dedicated fifty-six hundred hours of volunteer service to the hospital. She and her family began attending Beechwood Baptist Church in 1955 when the congregation first held services at Stivers Elementary School before moving to its current location on Biltmore Road. As a member of the church, Thelma worked with the Sunbeams, taught a Sunday School Class, faithfully attended WMU meetings, and served on numerous committees.

Thelma is survived by her daughter Patricia Revels, grandchildren Jessica Revels and James G. Revels, III, (Motomi), and great grandson "Buddy," and her sister Mary Trice. Also surviving her are several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Thelma's life will be held on Tuesday, July 12, at Noon at Beechwood Baptist Church, 201 Biltmore Road with interment at Louisville Memorial Gardens East. Visitation will be held 2-6 pm Monday, July 11, at Arch L. Heady-Cralle, 2428 Frankfort Avenue. In lieu of flowers: expressions of sympathy may be given to Beechwood Baptist Church.
