Thelma M. (McCabe) LePire-Oliveira, 89, our grandmother who we affectionately call Grams, died on August 20, 2016 from complications from Alzheimer's disease. Grams was born and raised in New Bedford, MA and spent her last years at the Residence at Cedar Dell in North Dartmouth, MA, whose wonderful staff always made her feel special and at home. Her final days at the Residence were spent surrounded by family and friends she had touched so greatly.

As a teenager, Grams worked for Woolworth's Five-and-Dime store in downtown New Bedford where her friendly ways and signature smile often forced customers to buy things they didn't need or want. As an adult, she became a hairdresser and soon was the owner/proprietor of her own salon, Thelma's Beauty Salon, where she fine-tuned her gift to gab with her many customers. Later she worked as a receptionist for Dr. McLaughlin, a children's dentist in Fall River, and was able to sweet-talk her petrified grandchildren through years of fillings and dental work. She also found time to provide 27 years of volunteer service at St. Luke's hospital where a lifetime of socializing and a passion of helping others was used to guide visitors. Along with her husband Ed, she was a member of the Goodyear Seniors Association, and the two could regularly be found leading the Twist somewhere on the local senior dance circuit.

Our Grandmother is the widow of Norman LePire, Captain of the Navigator out of New Bedford, who was lost at sea in 1977; and more recently a widow of Edward J. Oliveira, Chief Commissary Steward (US Navy, Ret.) and Instrument Technician (Goodyear, Ret.), who passed in 2013. She is survived by her daughter and spouse, Marie & Bruce Assad of Fall River; her sons, Gary LePire of New Mexico, Paul of Indiana, Kenny and Clint of Texas, and Carl of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will all miss her fun-loving ways.

The dance floor is now all yours, Grams. Love always, your grandchildren, Sean Flannery, Scott Flannery, & Jay Flannery and Adam LePire.

Her family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Thelma.
Her funeral will be Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 8 am from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a funeral mass at 9 am in St. Mary's Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Burial will be private. Visitation Friday 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be sent in Thelma's name to the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association at 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472 or by visiting alz.org. www.waring-sullivan.com for online tribute/directions.
