Our hero, Thomas Gowan Harris Sr., was called home on April 4, 2017 at the age of 92. Beloved husband, best friend, and dance partner of 57 years to the late Earline Martello Harris. His son, Steven J. Harris, preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter Brenda Harris and son Tom G. Harris Jr. (wife Barbara Feigler Harris). “Gramps” was a loving and entertaining grandfather to Thomas Gowan Harris III, Jacob Harris, Joseph Bergeron (Byrd), Emily Maddox (Will), Evan Bergeron and Christian Bergeron.



In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served our country during WWII in the Pacific Arena on the USS Vella Gulf, USS Ordronaux and the USS Cascade. During post war times, he served in Wakayama Occupied Japan.



After returning home from the war, he re-enlisted and served at the eight Naval District providing civic services during times of public emergency. He then became a New Orleans Police Officer in 1951. He served for the city for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant and remained an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Crescent City Lodge 2. He later became Chief of Security at Ochsner Hospital until his retirement in 1991.



Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
