Thomas J. Kaiser, age 82. Died Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the University of Vermont Medical Center after a brief illness. Originally from New York City he had been a Shelburne resident for over 40 years. Tom fell in love with Vermont on a New Year's ski trip in 1960. Moving to Vermont on January 16, 1962 he would spend the rest of his life in Vermont the State which he described as a great state and a great state of mind. Tom is survived by his son James A. Kaiser of Shelburne and had married for 30 years to Rose M. Kaiser who predeceased him on January 12, 1992. As a member of Christ the King Parish he served on the Parish Council for 6 years, sang with the Alleluia Choir for 15 years, was a Eucharistic Minister and served as an Altar Server at Funeral Masses. Tom enjoyed choral singing and was a member of the South Burlington Community Choir. A graduate of Saint John's University in New York, he attended law school and was Honorably Discharged from United States Marine Corps. He was a self-employed Vermont Licensed Insurance Adjuster operating Kaiser Claim Service on College Street for 29 years, enjoying his associations with insurance persons, agents, attorneys, shop personnel and the public. Tom served as the President of the Vermont Claims Adjusters Association for two terms during the 1960's. Tom started his insurance career with Allstate in New York, arriving in Vermont with GAB in 1962 and then was promoted to the Regional Office in Portland, Maine. He returned to Vermont in April of 1968 to open Kaiser Claim Service. He was a running enthusiast, deer hunter, skier, hiker and biker in his beloved State of Vermont. Tom was an active member of AA for over 30 years, loving to serve his brothers and sisters in the great fellowship of spirit, trudging the happy road of destiny with them, happy, joyous and free, knowing that recovery from the oldest identified problem of the human condition was initiated by two native Vermonters, Bill W. and Dr. Bob who were his heroes. He will be eternally grateful for the connections and he made in Halls of AA were he made his dearest and lifelong friends. Tom wanted to thank his physician, Dr. Mark Pitcher as well as all the doctors, nurses and staff of the University of Vermont Medical Center for the compassion and care he received as a patient. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial is being planned by the family for a date in the future.
