COLUMBIA - True Dent Henderson died in Columbia early on the morning of January 30, 2017, as a result of a fire in her apartment complex. Born in Cartersville, G.A., on June 5, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Leake Henderson and Francis Dent Henderson.
A descendant of early settlers in the Etowah River Valley, True came from a family of farmers and bankers. When her mother became incapacitated with multiple sclerosis, she became a part of the Columbia family of Edward Clarke and her aunt Mildred Dent Clarke. Her cousins Judy Clarke Hair and Erskine Clarke regarded her as their sister. Their children and grandchildren referred to her as Aunt True.
She was a graduate of Sullins College and was employed for many years in the accounting department of Piggly Wiggly Produce. In 2006 she returned to Columbia from Charleston to be close to Judy and Will Hair and the family of her “niece” Peggy Hair Alford. A member of Shandon Presbyterian Church, she particularly enjoyed her work with Meals on Wheels.
She is survived by Judy and Will Hair, Peggy and Tim Alford, Rob and Benjamin Alford of Columbia; Clarke and Amy Hair, and Kristen and Eli Hair of Atlanta; Will Hair of Salt Lake City; and by Erskine and Nancy Clarke of Montreat, N.C.; Legare Clarke Hartbarger and Chris Hartbarger, Loryn and Colleen Hartbarger of Swannanoa, N.C.; and Elizabeth Clarke Rogers and John Rogers, Samuel and Lucas Rogers, of Asheville, N.C. All of whom loved her very much. In addition, she is survived by many Dent cousins and by an extended circle of friends.
A Witness to the Resurrection service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Shandon Presbyterian Church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Those wishing to make a memorial gift may contribute to Shandon Presbyterian Church, Meals on Wheels, 607 Woodrow Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
