Verna Chatham passed away peacefully on December 16, 2017 at home with loving family by her side, at the age of 99. She was born on July 18,1918 in Thibodeaux, Louisiana to Eddie and Anne Boudreaux who preceded her in death. She was the eldest of 9 children and she was also preceded in death by sisters Hazel and Barbara, brothers Ernest, Peter and Nathan. She was married to Paul H. Chatham, Sr. and they had 4 children, Paul Jr., Malcolm, Patricia and Gerald. Paul, Jr. and Gerald also preceded her in death.


Verna and Paul Chatham were married in Quantico, VA in the chapel on the Marine Corps base at Quantico where Paul was stationed as a Marine waiting to be deployed to the Pacific during World War 2. While Paul was stationed in the Pacific Verna worked as "Rosie The Riveter" at the Higgins Landing Boat Plant in New Orleans where she was trained as a welder. After the war Verna worked at a bakery for a time doing the baking that she so loved. She then went to work for Saint Francis Cabrini School in New Orleans as the Custodian, the School Nurse and lastly taught ceramics at the school. She worked at Cabrini for 46 years where she was known as "Mrs. Chatham" aka "Mom at School" by thousands of children who attended Cabrini. Verna was awarded the Order of St. Louis Medallion for her dedication and service to the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.


Verna loved to bake, cook and was the eternal care giver for those in need without regard to her own needs and was beloved by all who met and knew her. Verna never met a stranger and was often the life of the party. She will be sorely missed by all.


Verna is survived by her son, Malcolm, daughter Patricia, Grandsons Michael Chatham, Anthony Chatham, David Chatham, Ben Chatham and Matthew Chatham; Granddaughters Bonnie Thomas Morrow, Cynthia Chatham and Katy Chatham Weller. She is also survived by her sisters Tessie, Juanita and Mildred, numerous Great Grandchildren and Great-Great Grandchildren.


On Thursday, December 21, 2017 family is invited to join together from 8:30am to 9:00am and friends are cordially invited to join together to share remembrances from 9:00am to 11:-00am at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, La 70124 (Metairie) The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00am with Interment to follow at The Garden of Memories Cemetery, 4900 Airline Dr., Metairie, La 70001
