Mrs. Vernetha K. Stewart departed this earthly life on Saturday, March 10, 2018. On March 25, 1923, Vernetha was born to the proud parents of Marion Keith and Willie Bell Jackson Baker. At an early age she turned her life over to God and joined the Center Baptist Church; later as a young adult she joined the Meadow Prong Baptist Church in Effingham, S.C. She also attended Maxwell Baptist Church in North Florence. As Vernetha continued along her path of spiritual growth she joined her beloved New Ebenezer Baptist Church family along with her husband James Stewart. Vernetha’s work experience started on the farm, she continued to move forward leaving farm life behind to work as a domestic. The Wentworth Manufacturing Company employed her for 18 years and the South Carolina Mental Retardation Center for 6 years finally retiring in 1984. Retiring from work did not mean she retired from life. Vernetha remained an active member of the Glendale Community Association and an active member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church. Until her illness, she regularly attended Sunday school services; was a Choir member, Missionary member as well as a Deaconess. Vernetha served for over 50 years as a member of the Order of Eastern Star joining in the latter years Hiram Chapter 181. Vernetha was a vibrant, energetic, gentle, kind, and loving woman. Her positive perspective on life, focus on peace, and optimism are eternal gifts she shared with all. She loved all types of music and loved to sing and dance. Vernetha took pleasure in planting her beloved flower and vegetable gardens each year to watch the seeds of life grow. She nurtured these seeds as she did her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. God loaned eight of his children to her to nurture and teach about this word. One son and seven daughters; Dorothy Dunlap preceded her to the fathers kingdom. Those who will cherish her loving memories are: Johnnie (Ida) Baker of Augusta, GA; Daisy B. Hall of Florence, SC; Patricia A. Bennett of Fulton, MD; Thomasina Bennett of Mitchellville, MD; Mary (Abdul) Rajah of Washington, DC; Janice (Thomas) Hopkins of Clinton, MD; and Linda Davis of Florence, SC. Vernetha’s legacy will live on through her grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family members and friends.
