Violet House, 88, of Marshalltown, died on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at the Iowa Veterans Home.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Richard Riggs officiating. Casket Bearers will be Mike Boyd, Eric Boyd, Michael Boyd, Matthew Boyd, Anthony Meyer, Greg Meyer and Justin Boyd. Honorary Bearers will be Sherry Meyer, Becky Oyler, Jeff Cleveland, Larry Cleveland, Bambi Oestmann, Morgan Oestmann, Brooke Oestmann, Michaela Boyd, Jessica Meyer and Jax Boyd. Interment will be at Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday and the family will be present from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Violet House Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Violet was born on June 2, 1928, near Thornburg, Iowa to Edgar "Jim" and Naomi Marie Gilbreaith Sanders. She was raised near Thornburg and Barnes City before moving to Montezuma. She attended school in Montezuma and graduated with the Class of 1945 from Montezuma High School.

In October of 1946, she was united in marriage to Warren Robert Boyd and to this union was born three children, Doris, Robert and Mike. The family made their home in Grinnell, and she worked as a seamstress for DeLong Sportswear Company and as a waitress in several restaurants in Grinnell.

In June of 1970, she was married to Paul House. Violet and Paul lived in various cities in Nebraska before settling in Lincoln. She worked in the food service at the University of Nebraska. She also traveled coast-to-coast with Paul as a truck driver. She has resided at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown for several years. Violet enjoyed camping, solving crossword puzzles, cheering on the Nebraska Corn Huskers and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Doris (Robert) Shoup of Grinnell; two sons, Robert (Eunice) Boyd of Carroll and Michael Boyd of Lincoln, Nebraska; her grandchildren, Becky (Bill) Oyler, Jeffrey (Kelli) Cleveland, Larry Cleveland, Sherry (Mark) Meyer, Michael (Patty) Boyd, Bambi (Jeff) Oestmann and Eric (Kelly) Boyd; her great grandchildren, Mark, Shawna, Clayton, Karlee, Joseph, Jessica, Anthony, Gregory, Michael, Matthew, Morgan, Brooke, Michaela and Justin; several great great grandchildren; and three sisters, Darlene Aalbers, Eula Fields, Phyllis (LeRoy) Meredith and Mary Lee (Judson) Jones; and many nieces and nephews.

Violet was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter-in-law, Peggy Boyd; and her sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty (Wayne) Sanders, Esther (Gale) Riggs, and Lois (Kenneth) Massengale; as well as her two brothers-in-law, Duane Aalbers and Ed Fields.
