COLUMBIA - Our sweet mother, Virginia Ball Loveless, 92, passed away quietly at the Columbia Presbyterian Community on August 30, 2017. She was a graceful southern lady in the truest sense.

Born June 4, 1925, in Jackson, Ga., the daughter of the late John Stilwell Ball, Sr. and the late Gail Hammond Ball, she spent an impressionable childhood, the turbulent Depression and war era, in rural Georgia. After graduating from Jackson High School in 1942, she spent her freshman year at LaGrange College before completing her education with a BA in Sociology at Wesleyan College in Macon. Educated as a school teacher, she spent one year teaching in Griffin before meeting and marrying in 1947 her husband of 69 years, Lawrence M. Loveless.

They adopted Columbia, where Virginia lived for the rest of her life. In 1949, she began a family while earning a salary and somehow finding the strength to team with Lawrence working during off hours to start a general contracting business. The contracting business eventually evolved to produce some of the most prominent and elegant Midlands homes of their day.

She was a devoted mom of three boys juggling Sunday school, Cub Scouts at her church of 50 years, Bethel United Methodist and, of course, PTA and Dixie Youth Baseball. Mom stressed to her children education, acceptance, a life of service to others as well as dedication, square dealing and perseverance.

Virginia loved everything about her church, the United Methodist women, her Sunday school class, her church circle and her lady bridge partners who would rotate as hosts, landing occasionally in her living room, laughing and shuffling cards late into fall evenings.

In later years they moved to the Columbia Presbyterian Community where she remained active for as long as possible. Loved by the staff, she was also a joy and inspiration to fellow residents.

Surviving are sons, John Lawrence “Jack” Loveless, Kenneth Ball “Ken” Loveless (Jondy), and Bruce Palmer Loveless (Joanne). She is also survived by six grandchildren: Reid, James, Mary Grace, John Dylan, Derek and Damon. She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, John Stilwell Ball, Jr.; and a beloved grandson, Chase Palmer Loveless.

The family extends its sincere appreciation to the caregivers from Home Instead, DayBreak and the Presbyterian Home for their kindness and compassion.

Private graveside services for family will be held Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park followed by services at 11:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Community Chapel, 700 Davega Drive Lexington, SC.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia, SC 29206.
