Virginia Simmons passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, November 13, 2017. She will forever be remembered as a positive influence on everyone she knew. She really made a difference in the world. Virginia was born in West Monroe, Louisiana on October 20, 1927 to Marvin Lee and Azalea Shaw DeFreese.
Virginia was loved dearly by many friends, neighbors, and family. She was an active, healthy person through the years. She enjoyed going out with her girlfriends, visiting family, exercising, and generally making people happy. She was a mother, preacher/engineer's wife, and active in her community and church. She was an extraordinary friend, role model, and supporter for all of her friends, co-workers, and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norman Francis Simmons, her in-laws Charles Gatha Simmons and Mallie Simmons, brother Ragan DeFreese, brother's-in-law Gene Simmons and James Simmons, and granddaughter Melody Adair Simmons.
She is survived by daughter Vivian Lynne Starkey and husband J.T. Starkey, daughter Katherine Lea Autrey and husband Ranny Autrey, son James Scott Simmons and wife Melissa Parkhill; grandchildren Jacob Starkey and wife Laurie Starkey, Joel Starkey and wife Lindsay Starkey, Joshua Starkey and fianc Katherine Kiesler, Cory Autrey and wife Nikki Autrey, and Holly Simmons; great-grandchildren Katelyn Warren, Allison Warren, Clayton Starkey, Ruby Starkey, Polly Starkey, and Jace Autrey.
She was happily married for 53 years to Norman Simmons. They lived in West Monroe, LA; Ruston, LA; North Little Rock, AR; Pine Bluff, AR; Shreveport, LA; Jackson, MS; Atlanta, GA; Grayson, LA; Oak Ridge, LA; El Dorado, AR (3 different times); Watkins Glen, NY; and finally, Houston, TX.
In her mother's footsteps, she enjoyed volunteer activities. She served on the board of the League of Women Voters in El Dorado, Arkansas, volunteered as assistant to the school librarian, served as coleader of a Brownie Girl Scout troop, served as co-leader of a Blue Birds Camp Fire Girls troop, volunteered as records keeper for Gethsemane United Methodist Church, served at various times as room mother for school classes, worked as officer and on PTA committees, received BS degree in Business from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana, and was a Certified Professional Secretary.
She worked for Louisiana Tech University (Ruston), Lion Oil Company (El Dorado), National Equity Life Insurance Company (North Little Rock), Emory University (Atlanta), Cities Service Company (Houston), Grant Geophysical Corporation (Houston) for 23 years, and Veritas DGC, Inc. (Houston) for 11 years. She was an active member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Virginia with a contribution to Chapelwood United Methodist Church, Louisiana Tech University, or your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 19 at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 S. Kirkwood, Stafford, Texas 77477.
