Virginia Elise Moore Vaughn, 96, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2017 at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, 4800 West Friendly Avenue, with Rev. Steve King officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, 901 Wharton Street.
She was born in Greensboro on July 8, 1921 to Joseph Tracy Moore (former Greensboro Postmaster) and Virginia Fentriss Moore. She graduated in 1942 from Women's College of the University of North Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After graduation, she worked for the Internal Revenue Service Tax Division for eight years. She married Edward Cordery Vaughn of Hammonton, NJ, in 1944 and after two daughters, returned to work at the Social Security Administration. She retired from there in, 1986.
Known for her ever-present smile, her passions were her faith, family and her dogs, with dancing and singing also very important to her. She was a faithful and charter member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church and Asheboro Street Baptist Church (predecessor to Friendly Avenue Baptist) and was involved in many church activities. These included Sunday School, Senior Choir, pastoral care, and many other endeavors. Virginia was an avid ballroom dancer, taking lessons as recently as 2014; she treasured trips to the beach, and wherever she could go to explore new places and experience life. Trips included Alaska, Hawaii, and Europe. She was a charter member of the Rushettes Club, a group of women who decided since they were always "rushing around" they would take some time every month to be together and not rush. She was also an active member of the American Legion and a member of NARFE, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was proud of her work as a civil servant.
She enjoyed her retirement, volunteering at Wesley Long Hospital and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Durham; she also stayed active in church and many other organizations, including Meals on Wheels. She continued traveling, especially to see her grandsons. She kept busy, attending Friendship Day at First Presbyterian Church, playing bridge, and teaching seated aerobics. She went on a mission trip to Argentina with Friendly Avenue Baptist in 1997, ministering as part of a two-person team going door-to-door with a translator, and speaking as much Spanish as she could, which she was proud to have learned later in life.
She is survived by two daughters--Janet Vaughn Powers of Alexandria, VA and her husband Jack and their son Daniel; Laurel Vaughn Luchs of Venice, FL, and her sons Joseph and Richard (wife Alice) and great grandson Wallace. She is also survived by sister-in-law Nora Davis Moore, niece Susan Paige Moore Holter (husband Joe and daughters Samantha and Katie), and nephew Robert Tracy Moore (wife Crozier and son Richard and daughter Ryann). Cousins include Martha and Charles Wood of Greensboro, their children and grandchildren, and Harriet Henderson of Pawley's Island, SC. Her brother, William Tracy Moore predeceased her in 2016.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street.
The family thanks the staff and caregivers of Brighton Gardens, Comfort Keepers, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.
