Virginia Haney Mawyer, 98, of Charlottesville passed away on January 29, 2016. She was born on February 9, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa. to Wyatt Beasley and Henritta Powell Haney.



Virginia married the love of her life Carlton Mawyer in 1940. They were married 56 years prior to his passing. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Wilber Haney; two sisters, Violet and husband, Bernie Owens, and Ida Hughes; and two brothers-in-law, Woody Detamore and Edwin Wilson.



Virginia is survived by two sisters, Mildred Detamore and Naomi Wilson; her brother, Wyatt Haney II and wife, Sara Jane; and her brother-in-law, Wallace Hughes. Virginia is also survived by her son, Barry Mawyer and his wife, Helene of Bellevue, Wash.; daughter, Claudia Evans of Schuyler, Va. Virginia, better known as Grandma Poppy delighted in her six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. Survivors include many nieces and nephews and special friends, Anne Simms and Gayle Davis.



Virginia was proud of being a farmer’s wife and loved living in Albemarle and Greene Counties. She was a very active member of Ivy Creek UMC and Stanardsville UMC. Virginia worked for JABA assisting the elderly in Greene County.



A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens, officiated by Pastor Liz Haney. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 3, 2017, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home.
