Walter I. Hassett (Walt) passed peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. Walter was predeceased by his loving wife, Sylvia, and his eldest son Lee. He is survived by sons David (Rosellen), James (Lori), Kirk, and Scott (Jessica) Hassett, numerous nieces and nephews, adored grandchildren Matthew, Michele, Kirk, Khira, Sarah, and Georgia, and great-granddaughter Olivia. Walter graduated from Binghamton North High School, served in the US Army and Army Reserve and had a long career at the Delaware & Hudson Railroad. He made friends easily and kept them close. He was an avid reader and movie buff, a longtime Yankee and Buffalo Bills fan, and loved a good boxing match. But he will be most remembered for his quickness with a joke or a clever cartoon. Calling hours will be from 3:00 - 5:00 on Sunday at Wm. R. Chase and Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson and interment will be on Monday at 11:00 am at Vestal Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Broome County Humane Society, 2 Jackson Street, Binghamton, NY 13903 are respectfully requested.
