Walter J. Hastings III (Jerry), age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 18,

2017 surrounded by family. He was born April 22, 1935 in Huntsville, AL to Walter Jr and

Mary (Warden) Hastings. He graduated from Huntsville High School and attended both

Auburn University and The University of Alabama. Jerry proudly served his country in the

Army as a member of the Pathfinders of the 82d Airborne Division. On September 10,

1958 he married Zaida Smith in Center Point, AL and they remained husband and wife

until his passing. Jerry was a tireless worker at his and his father’s trucking company,

Superior Haulers, where he put his tremendous mechanical aptitude to daily use

maintaining his fleet of trucks that provided the materials used in the building and growth

of Huntsville through the decades. He was also a car enthusiast and shade-tree-mechanic

who enjoyed driving and working on his Alfa Romeos as well as helping his

friends and family with their cars. One of his favorite things in life was following his

beloved Auburn Tigers and attending games with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Zaida; Son, Walter (Christy); Daughter, Johanna

Watkins; 5 grandchildren, Walter Hastings V, Joshua (Willoughby) Hastings, Sara Grace

(Chris) Clyburn, Ryan Fuller, and Taylor Watkins; Sisters, Mary Jane Crabtree and Terry

Sue Crouch; Brothers, Harmon (Gleaves) Hastings and Patrick (Jenness) Hastings. He

is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Edward Hastings.

Visitation will be Thursday September 21, 2017 from 12:30pm until 2:30pm with the

Memorial service immediately following in the chapel at Valhalla Funeral Home 698

Winchester Rd., Huntsville, AL
