Funeral services will be Sunday, April 9th, 2017 at 3 p.m., at Collier-Butler Chapel for Warren Childs Thompson, 92, of Gadsden, who passed away Friday, April 7th, 2017. The Rev. Carl M. Saxton, II and Drew Hall will officiate. Interment will be at Crestwood Cemetery.
Mr. Thompson was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter where he served as a Lay Reader and Eucharistic Minister. In 1941 he earned the Eagle Scout Award. He was a graduate of Gadsden High School (class of 1943) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY in 1945. He served in World War II and received the Purple Heart decoration. He started work at Southern Bell in 1950 and retired from South Central Bell in 1985. He worked with the Telephone Pioneers and served as President of Gadsden High School PTA.
He was an amazing husband, dad, granddad, and great granddad. He loved watching the Atlanta Braves and his dog, Peanut.
Mr. Thompson is preceded in death by wife of 71 years, Marion White Thompson; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Thompson.
Survivors include his children, Jimmy (Martha) Thompson, Dianne (Russell) Poore, Terry (Kelly) Thompson, and Karen (Alan) Hall; grandchildren, Janna (Blair) Perry, Rusty (Cyndi) Poore, Chris (Shay) Poore, Julie (Benny) Roberts, Heather (Tyler) Coggin, Drew (Gena) Hall, Molly Thompson, Nick Thompson, Lauren (Samuel) Tomlin, and Wade Koch; great grandchildren, Andy, Abbie, and Alex Perry, Giles, Cullen, Grey and Aubrey Roberts, Caroline and Mary Claire Coggin, Amryn Poore, Emory Kate Hall, and A.J. Cortes; brother, Edwin Thompson; sister, Florence T. Hopkins; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his sons, Jimmy Thompson and Terry Thompson; grandsons, Rusty Poore, Chris Poore, Drew Hall, and Nick Thompson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be friends, Joey Clark and Charlie Hart; and lifelong friend, Collier Whitehead.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Webb Sledge and staff, Dr. Randall Hess, Alacare Home Health and Hospice (Casey, Sarah, and Carol), Caregivers, Judy, Susan, and Diane, and Compassionate Comforters Sitting Service.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 1 p.m. until the hour of service.
