Wendell Thornton, Sr., 84, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Friday January 19th at 12:05pm at Huntsville Hospital. He was born in Hazlehurst, Georgia to Vernon Montgomery and Pauline (Ernie) Quinn Thornton. He graduated from Workmore High School in McRae, Georgia in 1949.
He met the love of his life, Mildred Ann Parrish, in McRae, Georgia. They were married in the McRae Baptist Parsonage on December 17, 1952.
Wendell was preceded in death by his wife Mildred of 65 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents and brothers Vernon Montgomery Thornton, Jr. and James Lee Thornton. He was also preceded in death by his nephew Richard (Richie) M. Thornton M.D. and by his grandson Aaron Michael Duffey.
Wendell is survived by his children Patricia Ann Thornton, Debra Thornton Duffey and her husband Walter Ernest Duffey, Jr. and their children William Matthew Duffey and his wife Brenna, and his daughter Hope Leeann Duffey, Sarah Elizabeth Duffey, and Wendell Thornton, Jr. and his children Wendy Thornton Long and her husband Curt and their daughter Keegan, John Michael Thornton and his son Austin Baker.
Wendell was a very loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He lived life to the fullest and loved his family unconditionally. He always enjoyed spending time on the lake fishing or skiing. In his early life, he was a Master Sergeant in the US Air Force. After his military service, he worked for Hayes International until 1980. For the past 37 years, he was a hardworking businessman that built and ran two printing companies - Thornton Service Corporation and Empire Press.
Visitation will be at 1:00pm Friday January 26th at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Road NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811, (256)852-8500, followed by a celebration of his life with Dr. Bobby Burt presiding. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery in the Last Supper section.
