William Aloysious Ryan ’53

Captain William A. Ryan, USN (Ret.), of Annapolis, MD, died on Sunday, 29 January 2017. He was 87 years old.

The son of a policeman, “Bill” was raised in New York City, where he attended Brooklyn Technical High School. Following graduation from the Naval Academy with the Class of 1953, he served aboard submarines and was commanding officer of Dogfish (SS-350). Shore tours included Naval Submarine School, OPNAV and Chief Staff Officer CSS-16 in Rota, Spain.

Following 30 years of service, he purchased land on the South River, cleared the lot, laid the foundation and built his retirement home.

Bill was a devoted husband and his sons’ biggest fan. He was a strong supporter of the Naval Academy and Navy football.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rachele; and four sons, Kevin ’78, Michael, William Patrick ’83 and David.

A brief non-denominational graveside service will be held at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium on Thursday February 2, 2017 at 10 AM.
