Captain William A. McLennan (Retired) passed away on April 22, 2017 in Carmel.

Dr. Bill McLennan was born April 30, 1916 in Duluth Minnesota to Alec and Ruth McLennan. He spent his childhood summers north of Duluth on his aunt's farm with his dog Ted, taking care of farm animals and riding his horse, Selam.

He received both undergraduate and dental degrees (Class of 1939) from the University of Minnesota.

Bill started practicing dentistry in Duluth in 1940; in October 1941 he married Mary Elizabeth Curry (Betty) and took a commission in the U.S. Naval Dental Corps. He completed Officer Candidate School at Great Lakes Naval Air Station and reported to the USS Raleigh in Pearl Harbor on December 14, 1941, just days after the attacks.

During his twenty year naval career, Bill was involved in the WWII Pacific Campaign (USS Raleigh) and Korean War (USS Hamul). His naval career took him and his family to Hawaii, East Coast, Alaska, Southern California and the SF Bay Area. Following his naval career, Bill practiced dentistry in Paradise and Monterey, CA, moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1970.
He built a home at Quail Lodge, which remained Bill and Betty's home until 2012. Betty passed away in 2004. Bill celebrated his 100th birthday in April 2016. He became a great grandfather in July 2016. Bill is survived by two sons Thomas and Steve, and four grandchildren: Clark, Stewart, Marisa, and Alexandra, and one great grandchild, Iona.
The family would also like to thank Drs. Holtz and Kubica and the staff at the Cottages.
At Bill's request there will be no local services; internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
