Bill Schaeffer, longtime Madison resident, passed away peacefully at home on June 26, 2016 at the age of 77. He was born June 22, 1939 to the late Elizabeth (Meck) Schaeffer and William C. Schaeffer in Frackville, PA and graduated from Frackville High School. After a brief time serving in the US Marines, Bill travelled with friends to Colorado Springs, CO where he met and married the love of his life before moving to CT.
Bill was happily married to Patricia (Mears) Schaeffer for 43 years and together they raised three children, Holly J. (Ken Poff) Schaeffer (Charlotte, MI), Billie M. Schaeffer (Chepachet, RI), and William P. "Skip" Schaeffer (Madison CT). Bill was employed by Stop and Shop as a meat cutter for over 40 years. Dad was an avid outdoorsman, known to take random excursions to hunt or fish throughout New England. He trained numerous hunting dogs including hunting and show champions. Many neighborhood children learned the wonder of the outdoors and how to be safe and considerate hunters and fishers from "Mr. Schaeffer" or "Pops". Together, Pat and Bill enjoyed NASCAR, parades, musters, and country music festivals, attending many of these events or travelling to discover new fun. After Mom's death from cancer in 2003, Dad continued to attend many of their favorite events as well as fishing in saltwater and freshwater, often with his faithful canine companions, Lee and Lexi.
He is predeceased by his wife, parents, and siblings Dan, Pat, and Inez. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his children, grandson William K. Schaeffer (Guilford, CT), son of Skip and Sandra Ashton (Branford), siblings Betty Russell (Lebanon PA), John Schaeffer (Pottsville, PA), Carol Whalen (Shenandoah PA), Hayley (Pat) Moran (Cascade CO), Cheryl (Tim) Waite (Warr Acres, OK) and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Visitation will be Friday July 29th, 2016 from 10-11:30 am at the Swan Funeral Home, Madison followed by a memorial service and burial at the Race Hill RD Cemetery, Madison.
