William (Bill) D'Amicis Florez (age 70, of Houston Texas) went to the Lord, October 14, 2017 at 10:58pm, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born in Mathis, Texas in August of 1947 to Armando and Josephine D'Amicis, as the second of eleven children. Bill's first languages were Italian and Spanish, before learning to speak English during his first year of school. Bill served his country as a sergeant in the US Army during the Vietnam War and has remained a proud veteran with a strong love for his country. After being honorably discharged, Bill attended Victoria College where he met his lovely wife of 44 years, Mary Jane Dornak, during a summer school English literature course. Initially, she would not share her notes with him, but Bill was persistent. Bill went on to graduate from Southwest Texas State University in 1973, and started his career in insurance in 1978 before establishing his own successful brokerage firm, which he has operated since 1982. Bill faithfully served the Lord through the Knights of Columbus since 1978, becoming the 4th Degree in 2001 and served as the Navigator and Admiral of the Msgr. George A. Wilhelm Assembly #1094. Bill loved spending time with his family and friends, playing dominos, cards, watching westerns and football. He also had a love for music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's and could be often heard belting out tunes while driving around town or dropping kids off at school. Bill had a massive personality, despite his height. He could light up any room and always made people smile, no matter how his day was going. He never knew a stranger and lived by Christ's golden rule. He was proud of his accomplishments, but he was most proud of his children. Bill and Mary Jane raised four children: David, Julianna, Lisa, and Joseph, each of which have earned various Arts and Sciences college degrees.
Bill was preceded in death by his father Armando, his brothers-in-law Dennis Loechel and Jesse Miller, nephew Scott McGinty, and his father and mother-in-law, Stephen and Dorothy Dornak.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Jane and his son David (wife Ashley) Florez, daughter Julianna (husband Richard) Fernandez, daughter Lisa (son in-law Avrien Veneralla), and son Joseph Florez as well as his 8 grandchildren, Madison, Meredith, Makayla, Gabriel, Jacqueline, Nicholas, George, and Henry; his mother, Josephine; his sisters, Helen, Sandra, Rosalee, Irma Jo, Angie, Anna, Gina, Darla; his brothers Dino and Dominick; and 22 nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends for visitation at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10330 Hillcroft, Houston, Texas on Thursday, October 19, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with a Rosary being recited at 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2017 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, with interment to follow in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. Donations can be made in memory of William D. Florez to the Knights of Columbus #1094 as well as the American Cancer Society.
