CLELAND, William "Bill" Edwin, 79, passed away on December 19, 2017. Bill was born in Elizabethtown in northern New York. He was the son of Elizabeth and Carlyle Cleland. He is survived by his wife Deanna; sons Jeffrey and Todd; his brother Steve; sister-in-law Nita; nephews Kevin and Ryan; and niece Stephanie. After graduation from Solvay High School in 1956, he joined the U.S. Air Force. Bill retired from the New York State Police in 1984. He had been a Syracuse police officer also. After his police service, he did security work and owned a locksmith business. He and Deanna were married 54 years, and for 33 years, they lived in Solvay, New York. They enjoyed family activities such as traveling, hiking, camping and cross-country skiing. Bill bowled in a Masonic League for about 30 years. His other activities included golf, softball, bodybuilding, karate (brown belt), coaching boy's baseball, and being in charge of the community baseball-softball program for boys and girls. The Cleland family moved to Arizona in 1999. At his retirement community, Bill was active in poker and billiards clubs. He was president of the billiards club for 2 years. He also worked out at a gym early every morning until he became ill with cancer. Bill was a loving husband and father and was devoted to his family. A Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, December 23, 2017 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at Surprise Funeral Care, 16063 W. Bell Rd., Surprise, Arizona.
