COLUMBIA - A funeral service for William Henry Battey, 90, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Wheat Street, with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Battey passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017. Born on April 10, 1927 in Belmont, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late William Henry Battey and Viola Church Battey.

Bill was a fire protection engineer for over 40 years, specializing in special hazards systems for chemical plants and refineries. Bill served in the U.S. Army, 1st Armored Division, 16th Combat Engineers, during World War II and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Wheat Street. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and in the Scottish Rite. Amateur Radio was his lifelong passion.

Surviving are his son, William C. Battey of Hanahan, South Carolina; daughter, Karen B. Kunkel (Ken) of Florida; grandchildren, William Brian Battey (Alexandra) of Overland Park, Kansas and Jennifer Kunkel; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Brannigan Battey, and his brothers, Marshall C. Battey and Robert Ashleigh Battey.
