William "Bill" Petty of Airmont, New York died on Sunday, May 21 2017. Born on January 23, 1935 to Carl and Mary Ellen (Yohn) Petty, Bill was raised in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and for most of his working life Bill was an engineer for Kraft General Foods, designing and troubleshooting food production and packaging facilities. In 1990, he earned a M.S. degree in Computer Science from Iona College, which allowed him to expand his role and responsibilities until he retired in 1996. Following his retirement, he began taking piano lessons and playing more golf.

Bill was active in the Ramsey Presbyterian Church community, where he enjoyed putting his love and talent for fixing things to good use on the Buildings and Grounds committee. He was a tenacious backyard gardener who coaxed tomatoes, zucchini, and sugar snap peas from the earth to the delight of friends, family, and local fauna.

William Petty is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice Carol (Leonard) Petty of Airmont, NY; his daughter Alice Petty and her husband Jason Hogg of San Francisco, CA; his sister MaryAnne Shiderly of Sharon PA, and her daughters Heidi Shiderly and Heather DeLong; his sister-in-law Ursula Pledger and her husband Fred; his nieces and their spouses Juliann and Paul Maurath, Melissa Pledger and James Radke and their children, Christopher Maurath, Adam Maurath, and Victoria Radke.

Visitation will be held at Wanamaker and Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, New York 10901 on Friday, May 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, New Jersey on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at noon.
