MYERS, Capt. William Stewart USN (Ret.)



86, Tampa, Fl, passed away on April 18, 2017. He was born in Mukden, China in 1930 moving to the US in 1941. He joined the Navy in 1949, proudly severing for 33 years. William was commissioned as Ensign, receiving his aviator wings in 1951. His career took him to Pensacola, FL; Corpus Christi, TX; Whidbey Island, WA; the Korean Conflict; Brunswick, ME; Keflavik, Iceland; Newport, RI; Washington DC; Virginia Beach, VA; Coronado and Point Mugu, CA before returning to Asia to become the first commanding officer of the Naval Air Facility Misawa, Japan. He then became the Commander of the Naval Training Center Orlando, FL. William ended his career on the Staff, United States Readiness Command, MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. Highlights of his career include flying the P-3 Orion, serving on the USS Randolph (CVS-15) and USS Ticonderoga (CVS-14), participating in the Apollo 16 recovery operation. Throughout his life Bill enjoyed camping, woodworking, reading and old classic movies. In retirement he and his wife enjoyed their time as members of the Davis Island Yacht Club and RV camping clubs. William was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Mattie Nugent Myers; his daughter, Donna; and his sisters, Mary Rogers Smith and Emma Jane Burnett. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Carpenter Myers; his daughter Deborah (Gary) Brown; granddaughter Sandra (Tom) Bockrath; grandson Chandler Brown; great granddaughters Kelsey and Alyssa Bockrath; and his sister Elizabeth Myers Macinata. Burial will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, FL
