William Reed Scruton, 89, passed away from natural causes on March 17, 2017, in Keene, where he lived most of his life.

He was born in Hillsborough, June 17, 1927, to Paul and Harriet (Reed) Scruton. He joined the U.S. Navy immediately after high school and served during World War II. He continued his service in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he went on to graduate from UNH with a B.A. in history. He was well known in Keene for many years as co-owner of the Keene Answering Service and for his 18 years working at the Cheshire Medical Center, where he was affectionately known as "Mr. Bill."

He is survived by his spouse of 54 years, Carolyn (Jennison) Scruton; two daughters, Kathleen Brown of Holden, Mass., and Kristen MacFarlane of Monkton, Md.; two grandchildren, William and Ethan Brown, both of Holden Mass.; his sister, Helen E. Andrews of Springfield, Vt.; and one niece and two nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, brother, niece and nephew. A private graveside service with military honors will be held at a later date.

He and his family wish to thank the caregivers, doctors and nurses at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene, HCS Hospice and Westwood Center in Keene.
