Willie Ethel Duncan Williams McCoin May 7, 1927 San Antonio, Texas - April 22,2017 Pacific Grove.
Born and raised in San Antonio, Willie Ethel was a graduate of Prairie View A&M College, where she met her first husband, Winston A. Williams. In 1975, she married Holland McCoin (now deceased). She is survived by her children: Winston A. Williams, Jr. (Betty), Gary R. Williams (Diane), Donna J. Gatson (Larry), and Darryl L. Williams (Peggy); and her grandchildren: Philappa, Rodrick, Darryl Jr., Jared, Alison, Daniel and Jordan.
A resident of the Monterey Peninsula for 64 years, she was involved in numerous organizations and activities. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Pacific Grove for 62 years, and taught in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District as one of the first Black teachers for 45 years (43 in kindergarten). She was a member of Christian Women in Action, the Monterey chapter of Links, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Willie Ethel was known far and wide for her beautiful soprano voice. She sang all the time at home, in the church choir, in rest homes, and the homes of people who were ill. She sang at a number of different churches, and with a choir at Carnegie Hall several years ago. Her involvement in all these activities was fueled by her faith in Jesus Christ, who provided her with the gift of service that she joyfully embraced. She saw her main ministry as visiting various nursing homes and shut-ins each week, bringing them flowers, singing to them and praying for and with them.
The family would like to thank the staff at Forest Hill Manor, Drs. Galloway and Kennedy and staff, and others who helped to care for Willie Ethel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be given to First Baptist Church of Pacific Grove or Christian Women in Action.
The celebration service will be held on Friday, May 5th, at 11am at First Baptist Church in Pacific Grove. Her burial will follow at Mission Memorial Park at 1915 Ord Grove Ave. in Seaside. A repast celebration will follow at Greater Victory Temple at 1620 Broadway Ave-Obama Way in Seaside.
