Willie James Brown, 87, Reading, died Aug. 29 in Jamaica Memorial Hospital, New York. His wife, Ruby Brown, died Dec. 22, 2004. Born in Simpson, Ga., he was a son of the late Will and Mary (Watson) Brown. Brown was employed for 48 years in the shipping and receiving department of Luden’s Inc., Reading, retiring in 1990. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Brown was a member of George Washington Carver American Legion Post 962, Reading. Surviving are a son, Samuel Johnson, Lancaster; and a daughter, Catherine (Johnson) Spearman, Queens Village, N.Y. Other survivors include a brother, Dan Brown, West Palm Beach, Fla. There are also six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Mae (Johnson) Buchanan, in 1990. Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Whelan Schwartz Funeral Home Inc., with the Rev. Ernest Glimp officiating. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens.
