Wilma Blair, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12 at Garden Villa nursing home. Wilma was born In Birdseye, Indiana on Sept 1, 1928 to Grace Waddell (Case) and Edward Lee Waddell. She was preceded in passing by her parents, her husband of 52 years, Richard Herman Blair, and her only sibling, her brother, Wayne Waddell.
She is survived by her three sons, George Sherman Poppa of Indiana, Brian Wayne Blair of Fort Wayne, and Richard Lee Blair of Bloomington. Two sister in laws, Marvene Waddell of Noblesville, and Roberta Kindred, of Spencer and one daughter in law, Maryfern Blair of Fort Wayne. Wilma had five grandchildren: Kimberly Ann Thomas, George Anthony Poppa, Stephanie Michelle (Poppa), Lindsay Taylor Blair and Nathan Douglas Blair. She was also blessed to have fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, one of which she was able to hold lovingly in her arms.
She worked at Waddell's Grocery, in Bloomington, and later at K-mart in Ladies wear. She was the featured solo singer with "The Jack Noel Show" on Channel Four in the early 1960's. She wrote and recorded a 45 rpm record in 1961, singing "I'm In Love". In the 70's and 80's, Wilma and the family took vacations driving to visit many historic sites pulling a Nimrod folding travel trailer. For about 15 years Wilma and her husband spent the winter months on the gulf coast of Alabama. She liked books and comedy shows on TV, and loved to watch the Hoosier Basketball team play. Wilma was a very loving wife, mother, and friend to all who knew her, and passed away knowing how much she was loved by everyone. She will be missed everyday but the many fond memories of her will keep her in our minds and in our hearts always.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, April 15th at 10:00 AM in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home.
