Zelma was born in Dallas at home in 1930 to Mamie and William J. Hand. She attended Forest Ave HS where she met Richard L. Atkins. Upon his return from serving in WWII, they eloped in 1946 and lived in Dallas. During their 65-year marriage, she was a traditional mom who was devoted to God, her husband, and their four children. An unusual twist in her life happened when her mother had a second family of four children. She and her mother were pregnant twice simultaneously and eight children were underfoot most of the time. Family was her greatest joy. She taught Sunday School, served as Brownie and Cub Scout leaders, PTA, Room Mother, and hundreds of other Mom Jobs. When the nest was empty, she entered the Dallas work force as a supervisor at Republic Financial Services and maintained mapping data at ARCO Exploration. She is predeceased by parents, brothers Robert and Bill Jr, her husband, and one grandson Jeremy. Survivors: Daughter Elaine Winburne; sons Richard Jr, Dennis, and Scott; brother Ron Hand; sisters Lynn Chapman, Mary York, and Sharon Wortham; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews in CA and Utah.
