Judge Albert W. Cretella, Jr, 83, retired member of the Connecticut State Appellate Court, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 7, 2009 while on vacation in Juno Beach, Florida. Born on May 18, 1925, he was a lifetime resident of North Haven, Connecticut. Judge Cretella was the son of the late Josephine Nutile Cretella and the Honorable Albert W. Cretella, a U.S. Congressman from the Third District of Connecticut.
Judge Cretella was educated at New Haven-Hillhouse High School (1943), Yale University (1944), United States Military Academy (West Point, B.S., 1947) and the University of Connecticut Law School (1950).
He was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1950 and practiced law at Cretella, Carboni & Cretella. He was elected to the Connecticut State General Assembly in 1971 and became Assistant House Majority Leader in 1973 and Counsel to the House Minority Leader in 1975. He also served as Town Counsel for the town of North Haven for 27 years and was a volunteer fireman for the Montowese District.
Judge Cretella served as Judge, Court of Common Pleas, 1977; Judge, Superior Court, 1978; Chief Administrative Judge, Civil Division, 1985; Chief Administrative Judge, Facilities, 1986; Judge, Appellate Court, 1990. He was President of the Connecticut Judges' Association from 1984-1986. He also served on the American Bar Association Executive Committee National Conference State Trial Judges in 1987. At the time of his death he was a State Trial Judge referee.
Judge Cretella was Vice President of the Quinnipiak Club, and a member of the New Haven Country Club as well as the Knights of Columbus.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Joan Turner Cretella. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, the Honorable Antoinette Dupont, former Chief Judge of the Connecticut State Appellate Court; his sister, Virginia Cretella Mars and brother Richard & wife Sunni Cretella; children Claudia & husband Mark Feuer; Albert Cretella III & wife Diane; Peter Cretella, Lisa & husband Paul Koches, and Anthony Cretella & wife Nancy; stepchildren Ellen Dupont & husband Ian Armitage, Antonia Dupont van der Meer & husband Peter van der Meer and William Dupont; 11 grandchildren and 7 step-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday March 12, 2009 at the IOVANNE FUNERAL HOME INC. 11 Wooster Place, New Haven from 3-8pm. Family and friends are asked to go directly to St. Therese Church 555 Middletown Ave. North Haven Friday morning at 10am where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Therese Church where Judge Cretella was a devoted parishioner.
