George Dale Reesman, 80, of Boonville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at his home. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the First Christian Church of Boonville with Pastor Dan Crum officiating and a reception following in the church fellowship hall. The family is having a private interment.
Mr. Reesman was born October 15, 1930 in LaPlata, Missouri, the son of George David and Alma Cleo Dale Reesman, both of whom preceded him in death. Dale moved to Boonville with his parents at age six, and graduated from Boonville High School in 1948. He attended Northeast Missouri State College before transferring to and graduating from the University of Missouri (A.B. 1953). He then entered the U.S. Army, serving for three years. He married Phyllis Dawn McDandel on July 2, 1955 in Aschaffenberg, Germany. Following his military service, Dale entered law school at MU. He graduated in 1959 having served on the Board of Editors for the Missouri Law Review, and joined the law firm of Williams, Williams and Reesman (now Williams, Reesman and Tate) in Boonville, where he practiced for 52 years. He also served as city attorney for Boonville and New Franklin (1960-1970) and Special Assistant to the Attorney General of Missouri, under Tom Eagleton (1960-1964). He was on the Missourians for Equal Justice steering committee and the Missouri Supreme Court's Task Force on Gender and Justice. Beginning in 1981, much of Dale's law practice was devoted to representing farmers in litigation with U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies, including farm-related civil and criminal matters in North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, Arkansas, North Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana and Rhode Island, as well as Missouri. He was a founding member of Farmers' Legal Action Group, Inc. (FLAG) of St. Paul, Minnesota, a public interest law firm for financially distressed farmers. Dale was honored with the Pro Bono Publico Award from the American Bar Association (1986) as well as the Missouri Bar Association Pro Bono Award (1986), the Missouri Bar Foundation Spurgeon Smithson Award (1993) and the Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Inc., Special Meritorious Award for Service to the Poor of Missouri and the Nation (1984). He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
Reesman's compassion for others and his sense of humor were evident in every aspect of his life. Very involved in his community, Dale was a member of the Board of Education (1961-1973, president 1965-1973), a director for both the Boonslick Savings & Loan Association and the United Missouri Bank of Boonville, a Friends of Historic Boonville director and a member of the Missouri River Festival of the Arts executive committee. He served for many years on the Walnut Grove Cemetery board. A member of the Concerned Citizens for the Black Community of Boonville, Reesman was honored as the group's Citizen of the Year in 1987. He served multiple terms on the board of Unlimited Opportunities and as Cooper County representative to the Heart of Missouri United Way board. More recently, he represented Boonville as lead counsel in its successful efforts to save the historic Katy Bridge. Twice he served terms as trustee for the State Historical Society of Missouri (1985-1988, 2009-present). He was a member of the Cooper County and Missouri Bar Associations and a lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Boonville, where he served as deacon and elder as well as a Sunday school teacher for 45 years. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Dale loved to travel with his wife Phyllis, especially to watch their granddaughters compete in sporting events or other activities, and to see his Missouri Tigers in action.
Dale is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of the home; two daughters, Ellen Reesman Klausen of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Sarah Reesman and husband Bill Tackett of Columbia, Missouri; and three grandchildren, Grace Ellen Klausen, Elizabeth "Betsy" Dawn Klausen and Kelley Reesman Tackett.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Unlimited Opportunities, First Christian Church, Katy Bridge Fund or Concerned Citizens For The Black Community of Boonville (CCBC) in care of Thacher-Wood Funeral Home, 517 Fourth Street, Boonville, Missouri 65233, phone 660 882-2495.
