Rev. Alfred E. "Gene" Cope Sr. 75 of Granite City went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 18, 2011. Gene was born on January 1, 1935 in Greene County, Illinois to Clarence H. & Cleda (Marshall) Cope. He was the current Pastoral Care Minister at City Temple in Granite City. He had been an Assembly of God Pastor since 1960 serving countless people and touching many lives. He will be remembered for his love of God, his family and his kind heart for others. Gene lived his life as an example for others to follow. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958. Gene will be missed by his wife, Marie (Penney) Cope who celebrated their 54th anniversary on February 14th of this year. Daughter; Kristy & (Gene) Coughlin of Collinsville; sons; Gene & (Tammy) Cope Jr. of Granite City, Rev. Richard L. & (Debbie) Cope of Granite City. 10 grandchildren; Michelle, Amy, Marissa & (Greg), Jonathan, Adam, Emily, Tiffany, Tabitha, Timothy, Trevorr. 3 great-grandchildren; Avarey, Matthew, Emery. 3 sisters; Dorothy & (Richard) Reno, Frances & (Bob) Burch, Linda & (Don) Ayers. Sister-in-Law; Betty Kelley. Brother-in-law; Bill & (Vickie) Ivester and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Della J. Ivester; brother, Richard Kelley. Friends may call on Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at City Temple, 4752 Maryville Road in Granite City. A visitation will continue on Monday, March 21, 2011 from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m. at the church. A celebration of his life will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Larry Griswold and Rev. Gary Blanchard officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials are suggested to City Temple or the American Cancer Society.
