VICKERY, Albert E.

Al passed away Wednesday afternoon, February 25, 2009 in Portage. He was born September 10, 1922 in Stratton Ridge, Texas, one of seven children to Elmer and Florence (Gregory) Vickery. Growing up poor in the South during the Depression, Al was the first in his family to attend college. Graduating from Texas A&M University, Class of 1944, Al paved the way for 24 additional family members to graduate from Texas A&M. He was employed by Allied Paper for 26 years until his retirement in 1986. On August 9, 1945, Al was united in marriage to Geraldine Haessly in Fond du Lac, WI. Surviving are his devoted wife of 63 years, Geri Vickery; their 4 children, Barbara (Larry) Archer of Plano, TX, Deborah (Davor) Novosel of Columbia, MO, David (Lynette) Vickery of Grand Rapids, and Mark (Julie) Vickery of Portage; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 4 sisters, Mildred Laughlin of Friendswood, TX, Louise Holmes of Sugar Land, TX, Betty (Henry) Schlitzkus of Damon, TX, and Rosemary Fogle of Clute, TX. Preceding him in death were his parents, Elmer and Florence Vickery; 2 brothers, Chester and Francis Vickery; and 1 grandson, Ivan Novosel. Funeral services for Al will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1515 Helen Avenue, with Rev. Gerald Duggins and Rev. Janet Duggins officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of services at the church. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Loaves and Fishes or Westminster Presbyterian Church. Arrangements by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E.
