Alberta Burke Obituary


Alberta Barnett Burke was born October 25th, 1914 in East St. Louis, IL to the union of Fred Barnett and Mable Richards Barnett. She had one brother, Robert and one sister, Grace. Alberta Barnett Burke graduated from Trenton High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. After graduating, Alberta returned to St. Louis, MO. On June 23rd, 1933 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Walter Madison Burke. From this union 6 children were born, Walter Jr., Richard, Imogene, Gwendolyn, Peggy and Rodney. Alberta lived a very full and ambitious life. In the late 1930's, she accepted a position with the St. Louis based, United States Ammunition Plant. She worked there several years before changing careers. In the early 1940's she accepted a position in the Missouri State Capital in Jefferson City, MO where she worked with and developed relationships with several prominent politicians including former President Harry S. Truman. During the 50's and early 60's she also worked closely with prominent businessman and powerful 19th Ward Committeeman, Jordan W. Chambers. After a career in politics, she decided to pursue a career in nursing, where she worked for over 30 years. After her nursing career, she worked as Assistant Director of the St. Louis Police Youth Corp Organization. She ended her career working with the City of St. Louis in the License Department. Inactivity was not in Alberta's DNA. Through her travels she met and built relationships with many people. In the late 60's, she joined the Chicago based social club, "Thrifty Ladies" where she was an active member for several years. During her later years in life, she was an active member of the St. Louis Community based Organization, St. Vincent DePaul, serving the less fortunate in the St. Louis Community. She was always trying to help people. To know her was to love her. She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Barnett, husband, Walter Burke, brother, Robert Barnett, mother, Mable Campbell, sister, Grace Campbell, son, Walter Burke, Jr., and Richard Burke. In departing, she leaves to celebrate her life: daughters, Imogene Glaze (Leo, decreased), Gwen Lanier (Warren), Peggy Thomas (Irvin) and daughter-in-law, Connie Smith; she leaves one son, Rodney Burke (Karen); she is also survived by granddaughters, Janet McGee (Jerry), Robin Hoffman, Alma Burke, Onva Burke and Danielle Thomas; grandsons, Eric Burke, Brian Glaze (Kim), Sean Thomas, Demetrius Thomas; great-grand-daughters, Yana Gregory and Lyric Butler; great-grandson, Korey Glaze, nieces and nephews, Gerniece Mosley, Denise Mosley (Tommy), Keith Barnett, Stacy Barnett (Legita) and Michael Anthony Mosley (Andrea); and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
