Alex Sabol, 82, loving husband of 60 years to Theresa (Zdinak) Sabol, of Weirton, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Life Line Hospital in Wintersville, OH. Alex was born September 8, 1929 in Toronto, Ohio, to the late John and Mary Sabol. He graduated from Toronto High School in 1947. Alex retired from Weirton Steel Corporation after 44 years of service as an operator on the Continuous Anneal Line in the Tin Mill and was in the United States Air Force and a Korean War Veteran. Alex is survived by his wife Theresa and 8 children: Alex (Anne) Sabol of Centreville, VA; Michael Sabol of Weirton; Terri (Bill) Bocek of Weirton; Cecelia (Ed) Conley of Weirton; Mary Ann Sabol of Charlotte, NC; Jane (Kevin) Miller of Toronto, OH; Veronica Zaney of Charlotte, NC and Joanne (Doug) Smith of Harmony, PA; one sister, Virginia Henry and brother-in-law Tee Henry of Bull Head City, AZ and brother-in-law Ed Vogt of Kingsport, TN. Alex was an amazing "Zedo" to his 20 Grandchildren: Bryon Sabol, Alexis (Sabol) Weisskopf, Megan Sabol, Jonathan Bocek, Dana Bocek, Mindy (Conley) Gilleland, Lori (Conley) Vandeborne, Marleea Sabol-Hall, Terra (Miller) Rauschenberg, Kevin Miller II, Emily Miller, Jeffrey Zaney, Robert Zaney, Jacquelyn Zaney, Kyle Smith, Levi Smith, Grady Smith, Quinn Smith, Isaac Smith and Virginia Smith. Alex has 12 Great-Grandchildren: Ayden Sabol, Amare Sabol, Ava Gilleland, Reece Gilleland, Ethan Rauschenberg, Seth Rauschenberg, Robert Vandeborne, Alexandra Vandeborne, Madison Sabol, Landen Sabol, Savannah Sabol and Liam Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother John Sabol, Jr., sister-in-law Betty Sabol, his sister Mary Stock, brother-in-law James Stock, his sister Helen Vogt and daughter-in-law Dee Sabol. Alex was a member of the Knights of Columbus Toronto Council 2187 where he was past Faithful Navigator, past Grand Knight and K of C Fourth Degree Assembly. He was a member of the Weirton Radio Watch, Four Seasons, VFW, Moose and the American Legion. He was also an active member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic church where he served as an usher, was a member of the Men's club and church choir where he met his wife, Theresa. Alex was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He enjoyed spending time with his large family, especially during the holidays where they celebrated many Slavic/Byzantine traditions. Alex also loved to listen to Polka music. Visitation will be Friday, February 3rd from 4-8pm at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, WV, where Parastas will be held at 7:30pm. On Saturday, February 4th, funeral services will begin at Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home at 10:30am followed by 11am Mass at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church. The Reverend Father Ed Lucas will officiate. Services will continue at St. Paul's Cemetery in Weirton with military graveside services provided by the American Legion Firing Squad. Following the services, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Serbian Culture Center in Weirton. The Sabol family would like to extend their gratitude to the Life Line Hospital staff of Wintersville, OH for their compassion and loving care during Alex's final days. Contributions in memory of Alex can be made to St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, 3116 Elm Street, Weirton, WV 26062.
