He was a member of FOE Lodge #898, the American Legion, Beach Lodge #169 Knights of Pythias, Portsmouth Temple #4 Pythian Sisters, a member of the Elks Lodge, and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. For many years Paul was an over the road truck driver and was proud of holding a record of five million accident free miles. He also worked as a heavy equipment mechanic with McLean Industries. He is survived by daughters, Paula Ann Derdall, Susan Brady, Deane McCauley, Arlene Shultz, and Helen Evans (Bill) of Chesapeake, VA; sons, Paul Grathwohl, Daniel Grathwohl, and Brice Pickel; grandchildren, Paul, Daniel, Anthony, Tom, Amanda, Billy, John, Grace, Joslynn, Tisha, Melanie, Mark, Christine, Deana, Alan, Charles, Roland, Elizabeth, Penny and Angie; great grandson, Aiden; sister, Susan of Torrington, CT. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Light. Paul had many friends and adopted children. He was known as "Pops," "the Old Man" or "Butch" in the many local establishments he would frequent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 34 Afton Parkway, Portsmouth, on Saturday at 11 a.m. A party to celebrate his life will be held at the home, 477 Plummer Drive, Chesapeake, following the church service. Everyone is invited to stop by, share a favorite story, have a bite to eat and raise a glass in his memory. Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Hwy. Chapel is handling arrangements. His ashes will be privately interred at Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.snellingsfuneralhome.com.
