Middleburgh- Alice E. Wharton, 91, formerly of Middleburgh, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Kaaterskill Care Nursing Home in Catskill, NY, where she had been a resident for the past few years.
Born September 20, 1919 in Schoharie, she was a daughter of Charles and Gertrude (White) Acker. Alice lived in Schoharie and Gallupville in her younger years and was a graduate of Schoharie Central School.
Upon marrying Gerald Wharton, she moved to Middleburgh and assisted him at the former Middleburgh News as a proof reader. Alice had also been employed as an operator at Middleburgh Telephone Co. for several years before working at the NYS Dept. of Tax and Finance as a data entry clerk for seventeen years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald.
Alice was a member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Middleburgh. She enjoyed her close friends while living there, along with frequenting the local diner.
Survivors include her daughter: Geraldine VanVoorhis of Oak Hill; a sister: Mabel Youngs of Schoharie; three grandsons: James (Sherry) VanVoorhis of Preston Hollow, Jeffrey VanVoorhis (Susan Fox) of New Freedom, PA, and Matthew VanVoorhis (Donald Smith) of Greenville; three great-grandchildren: Timothy and Amy VanVoorhis, both of Preston Hollow, and Kaci VanVoorhis of Pace, FL; and two great-great-grandchildren: William and Hunter VanVoorhis both of Orlando, FL.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tues, May 31, 2011 at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh with Rev. Peter DeBartolo officiating. Inurnment will follow in Old Stone Fort Cemetery, Schoharie. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home from 10:30 AM until 11:00 AM, Tues, prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main St., Middleburgh, NY 12122.
