Alice Jones was born July 20, 1927 in St. Helens, Oregon. She was the 7th of 10 children born to Angeline and Albert Jones. There were five brothers - Melvin, David, Albert, Edwin and James. There were also four sisters - Loretta, Bernice, Elizabeth and Anna Mae. She attended John Gum Grade School in St. Helens and then Immaculate Heart School and Girls Polytechnic High School in Portland. Alice was married to Wallace Zavoral in 1949 in Portland. They had four children: Wallace in 1951, Janet in 1954, Llewellyn in 1957 and Kathy in 1958. Although she moved to California briefly in the mid-1950’s, she lived the rest of her life in Portland and Milwaukie. She worked at a restaurant called Mannings in downtown Portland. Around 1964, Alice was hired as a program coordinator to help organize programs for those in need. She worked on the federal War on Poverty. Two of the most important programs that resulted from programs she worked for were Head Start and Kaiser low income health care. She then went to work for the Portland Public schools as a teachers aide for students with special needs. She eventually retired from Kellogg Middle School in 1990. Alice is grandmother to 8 - Scott, Christine, Nicholas, Gina, Matthew, Aaron, Angela and Heather. She is also great grandmother to 9 (with two more on the way). She had a great love of antique hunting, coin collecting, swimming and watching baseball & basketball (the Trailblazers). Alice enjoyed spending time at the beach and at one time had a trailer of her own in Ocean Park, WA. She spent many happy days there with her family.
