Allen Powell Martinson, 75, a resident of Norfolk, VA, passed away at 1:45 p.m. on December 13, 2011. Allen was born in Seaford, Virginia on February 4, 1936 to the late Sarah Alice Nelson Martinson and Otto Barnhart Martinson. He attended John Marshall Elementary, Blair Junior High, and graduated from Maury High School in absentia in January 1956. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in mid-1955 for three years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge, he attended night school and earned a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Old Dominion University. While working toward a degree at night, he began his civil service career as a Fiscal Accounting Clerk and later as a Budget Analyst at the navy Regional Finance Center. In early 1959, he took a position in the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Navy in Washington D.C. Returning to Norfolk in 1961, he became a Budget Analyst at the naval Facilities Engineering Command; he was later selected to be the Budget and Accounting Officer at the Naval Ship Engineering Center, Norfolk Division; his final position was Deputy Comptroller at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he worked until he retired in 1993. He was a member and Past Master of Ruth Lodge No. 89, A.F. & A.M., a member and Past Patron of Virginia Chapter No. 22 of Norfolk, and Past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Virginia, Order of the Eastern Star. He was an avid fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies. Allen is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty S. Martinson; two daughters, Donna M. Krizman (Kevin) of Crofton, Maryland and Carol A. Tyree of Cornelia, Georgia; "Popi" to three grandchildren, Kristen Noelle Honaker, Bryan Allen Honaker, and Jessica Marie Tyree; and one great granddaughter, Alyssa Brook Lee; and two brothers, Otto B. Martinson (Brigita) and R. William Martinson (Rita). A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2011, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel by Pastor Kenny Bryant. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
