Mrs. Alma Cruz was called home to our Heavenly Father on December 17, 2011 in Austin, Texas. She was born on November 1st, 1942 to Louis and Juanita Govea in Pearsall, Texas. She attended Govalle Elementary, Allan Junior High, Austin High School and Johnston High School, where she met many lifelong friends including her future husband Luis Cruz. They shared 51 years of marriage and were a true example of unconditional love. Together they raised five children, Joelle, Cynthia, Carole, Albert and Lisa. They also considered countless friends and neighbors as family. She never met a stranger.
Alma was a member of many extra-curricular programs throughout her life, including The Austin Palette Club. Reading, volunteering and supporting the artistic community were three of her favorite pastimes. She had a wealth of knowledge to share and legend has it that she could answer every question on Jeopardy.
She was a loving grandmother and greatly enriched the lives of her grandchildren. Every summer, she looked forward to taking them on weekend excursions to explore museums, zoos and any other adventures she could think up. She was also proud to be a Longhorn grandma.
She dedicated her life to her family and impacted many lives through her compassion, love and loyalty. She spent countless hours serving the Austin community as director of The Christmas Bureau for over 20 years. She inspired all who met her to live life to the fullest and she never left the house without her lipstick.
She will be greatly missed by her husband Luis T. Cruz; their 5 children, Joelle Cruz, Cynthia Cruz, Carole Cruz-Aguilar, Albert Cruz, and Lisa Cruz; six grandchildren, Nicole Cruz, Erika Cruz, Jonpaul Villalobos, Alexander Cruz-Aguilar, Nathaniel Cruz-Aguilar and Xzavier Cruz; two great-grandchildren, Isaiah Villalobos and Julian Cruz-Gonzales (due March 2012), and her sister Norma Govea-Galindo. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Paul Govea and Louis Govea, Jr.
A viewing will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish on North Lamar, Thursday December 22nd from 9am to 9pm.
