Alton David Holland, 84, of Concord and formerly of Hickory, passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at his residence. Born August 4, 1928 in Pocomoke, MD, he was the son of the late Chester and Evelyn Pilchard Holland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Delores Holland; sister, Irene Jenkins; and brother, Edwin Holland. Mr. Holland began his career with the government at the age of 16, working for the FBI. He then joined the U.S. Army but retired from the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War, where he received many service medals. After his retirement from the Air Force he retired from the Internal Revenue Service. He is survived by two sons: Alan D. Holland and wife Allison of Tallahassee, FL, Michael Holland and wife Janet of Tallahassee, FL; two daughters: Tondra Cloer and husband Stewart of Plano, TX, Patricia Chipman and husband Todd of Concord, NC; grandchildren: Amy Holland, Brent Holland, Dustin Holland, Brittany Holland, Stewart Cloer, Mary Cloer, Nicole Chipman Arone, Abigail Chipman, Todd Chipman, Jr., Brady Chipman; and a great-grandchild, Amber Delores Arone. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 – 8:00 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Alton David Holland.
