Alura Mae McManus Spikes, 81, of Lubbock passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011. She was born November 10, 1929 in Eunice, Louisiana to William Carey and Mae Ash McManus. She moved from Louisiana to Lubbock at the age of eleven and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1945. She then earned a Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in 1948. She married John Leslie Spikes on December 24, 1948 in Lubbock. They had been sweethearts since she was 11 and he was 14. Johnny preceded her in death on November 16, 1997. Together they owned and operated Spikes Bros. Furniture for over fifty years.

Alura was the best wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was exuberantly generous, friendly, hilarious, and fashionable. She was truly one of a kind. She was a longtime member of St. John’s United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her four daughters, Cynthia Spikes High and husband Timothy Griffin High, Kay Spikes Moore and husband Thomas Watson Moore, Leslie Spikes Green and husband Joe Forrest Green, and Patsy Spikes Sherrod and husband Roy Lyn Sherrod. She is also survived by her seven precious grandchildren: Mollie Kay Green, William Carey (Bill) Green, Katherine Rhea Moore, Thomas Jackson (Jake) Moore, Samuel Benjamin Spikes Sherrod, Jack Henry Spikes Sherrod, and Anneka Christine High; 1 sister, Carrey Ann McManus Halbert of Hammond, Louisiana and 2 nieces; Debbie Halbert Glover and Linda Halbert Param, both of Hammond, Louisiana.

The family will receive visitors at Alura’s home from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday evening. Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home on Saturday, January 29th at 2:00, and a memorial service will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 30th at 3:00. The Spikes girls would like to suggest memorial donations to Hospice of Lubbock in appreciation for the loving care our mama received.
