Anacoreta Bautista Sunga was born 86 years ago in the sleepy town of Macabebe, Pampanga, Philippines. She was the fourth child of Pablo Bautista and Epifania Reyes who married the late Panfilo Sunga Sr., and bore him eight children: Patria, Panfilo Jr., Purisima, Perfetual, Panfilo Paulino, Panfilo Francis, Pura, and Penafrancia.
Fondly called "Dang Curing" by people who knew her, and "Ima" by her children, our mother lived a full life characterized by devotion, fortitude and selflessness. She was a devoted mother, a loving wife, a doting grand mother and a dedicated teacher. Our "Ima" believed in the goodness of every
individual. One who believed that everyone was a friend, a human being worthy of respect and affection.
As a grade school teacher, Ima's students were her source of pride and inspiration. As a wife, our father was her partner, her very best friend. As a mother, she was our shield, our source of strength. And, as a grandmother, she was the tireless baby sitter, the personification of patience and
understanding.
Ima, we can't thank you enough for everything you have given us; for taking care of our children; for tirelessly showing us what unselfish and unconditional love means; and most of all, for not giving up on us whenever we found ourselves struggling to find the roles we have to play in this world. Indeed, we have come to terms with these roles because of you, and though you're no longer with us, we know that somewhere … someday, the Lord will reunite us with you again.
