Andrew Grillo DeJong, age 20 of Waterford, CT passed away unexpectedly on August 25th 2010. Born January 4th, 1990 in New London, CT, he is the beloved son of John Andrew DeJong of Norwich, CT and Maria del Carmen Grillo of Waterford, CT. He will be missed by his step-father Peter Fuhrmeister, his siblings: Angela DeJong, Maria Grillo, Julia Roberts and Matthew Fuhrmeister, his grandparents: Pablo Grillo, Maria Jacome, Donald (Dutch) & Shirley DeJong and his wife Jenna Lynn Sasso of New Jersey. Andrew is also survived by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him dearly. Andrew loved his family and was a loyal friend. He could always be counted on to help anyone, but especially those who had no one else to stand up for them. He had an independent spirit, and his friends had a great deal of respect for him. He was in love with technology, liked computer games, needed to have the latest gadgets and was pursuing a degree in Computer Programming. But at the same time, he was eager to be outside, whether he was scuba diving, snowboarding, kayaking, or just having a bonfire with his friends. He had a way of making people feel good just to be around him. He was a caring loving son, brother, husband, and true friend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Huntington St., New London. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New London. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either of the following: The "Andrew DeJong Memorial Nature's Classroom Scholarship Fund" managed by the Regional Multicultural Magnet School Foundation, 1 Bulkeley Place, New London, CT. This fund was established because of his love for Nature's Classroom. Also, donations in his name can be made to the Diveheart Foundation http://www.diveheart.org where Andrew volunteered to help disabled divers.
