Ann Tilghman Bowie Rice of Annapolis, beloved wife of the late Emory Clark Rice, Jr. passed away at her home on October 3, 2011. She was born on July 2, 1933 and raised in Upper Marlboro, MD as the only child of Benjamin Hall Clark Bowie and Helen Slingluff Bowie. She graduated from Holton-Arms School and Junior College in Washington DC. She worked for the Maryland Department of Legislative Services and directed the Maryland Legislative Information Desk. She was sworn in as the Assistant Secretary of the Senate in 1980 becoming the first woman in Maryland history to serve as a desk officer for the Maryland Senate. Throughout her life she was a dedicated volunteer for many Annapolis organizations. She was an active member of the Junior League for over 20 years organizing and chairing many committees. As a member of the Historic Annapolis Foundation, she helped to establish a children's museum in the Shiplap House on Pinkney St. in Annapolis. She was past president of the Hammond-Harwood House Board of Trustees and was also active in helping to preserve, maintain and fundraise for the Charles Carroll House of Annapolis. Among her many interests and joys were her family, friends, entertaining, playing bridge, sailing, travelling and spending time at her summer home on Swan's Island, Maine. She was a generous and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend with unique talents. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter Josephine Rice Herring, her son-in-law Peter Naisby Herring of Upper Marlboro, MD, and her daughter Ann Bowie Rice of Annapolis, MD. She is also survived by her grandson Lieutenant Benjamin Naisby Herring, USN, his wife Cara Lyons Herring, grandson Tilghman Rice Herring, granddaughters Sarah Bowie Herring, Naisby Wallop Herring and great granddaughter Katherine Naisby Herring. Visitation will be held at her home on Thursday, October 7 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral will be at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 North Bestgate Road Annapolis, MD on Friday, October 8 at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at the Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Upper Marlboro, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Swan's Island Volunteer Fire Department & Ambulance, Swan's Island, ME 04685.
